l° Off: Your Passion Is Not About You

We started this chapter talking about money. On either end of the money spectrum, money won’t bring happiness. Being rich doesn’t automatically bring happiness, and being broke doesn’t necessarily bring unhappiness. We understand money is important, but we’re a little off on how and why it can create happiness in our lives. In a similar way we know passion and happiness are tied together, but are 1° off on the connection.

Money is a tool. What do you do with a tool? You use it as a means to an end, not an end in itself. With tools, you can accomplish things that you have no way of doing on your own. That’s why you see great people who make lots of money creating foundations and contributing to programs that change lives. Money is a tool to help you positively affect other people.

Your passion is a tool. Your unique passion is a resource that helps fuel your ability to add value to your world. If you pursue your passions hoping it will bring you happiness, you will never be happy, because living a life of passion is not about you.

Relationships are what bring happiness. Affecting people in positive ways brings happiness. If you try find your happiness by being selfish or hurting other people, any enjoyment you derive will be temporary, and ultimately very lonely.
